Sustainability isn't a feature — it's an architecture

Cloud AI's energy footprint is well documented at this point: massive data centers running around the clock, cooled aggressively, serving inference requests from anywhere in the world. It's an efficient way to centralize compute, but it's not a free lunch.

Apeirogon takes a different approach almost by accident. Because we run inference on hardware you already own, we're not spinning up additional data center capacity for every user. The compute exists either way — we're just making better use of it.

We're not claiming this scales to replace data centers entirely. Some workloads genuinely need centralized compute. But for the category of work Apeirogon handles — spreadsheets, documents, presentations — there's no reason it has to leave your device at all.

Sustainability, for us, isn't a badge we added after the fact. It's a direct consequence of choosing local-first architecture for reasons that started with privacy and unlimited usage. The environmental benefit came along for the ride.
